Photobucket is a huge social image site that lets you upload, manage and edit your pictures as well as share and host them on other sites. This iPhone app makes the experience mobile.

Photobucket lets you add photos to your online albums easily, and now features geo tagging, so your viewers will be able to see where the picture was taken. You can upload to your account straight from your phone, although there are few additional options, like basic color balance or editing.

You can, however, turn any picture into a joke with the 'insert-a-face' feature, which has cut outs of babies and other things that you can insert a face from you photo. That's very basic, and seems to be a silly afterthought in Photobucket.

There are lots of images you can browse on Photobucket, and this is the best designed part of the app. If you're looking for a wallpaper, or simple enjoy browsing photos, there's a lot to see in Photobucket.

Photobucket is a functional photo app, but it doesn't really do anything new, and is missing more advanced editing tools.

PhotoFunia is an unusual app that allows you to create fun images using faces of you or your friends, with photos taken on your phone.

Using an internet connection, PhotoFunia will insert a face into one of a large range of images. There are pictures ranging from billboards, angels, sports people paintings and more. Select an image you like and then choose one of your photos. PhotoFunia will the upload your image to their servers, detect the face and insert it into your chosen image. It is not made publicly available, just sent back to your phone.

The image you receive can be either emailed or simply saved on your phone. Some of PhotoFunia's images use facial recognition technology, with mixed results, and others require you to crop your photo yourself.

PhotoFunia is easy to use, but as the images are created on their website, the app is quite slow. It would perhaps be more user friendly if the app created the montage locally, especially as when facial recognition fails the wait can be frustrating.

If you like novelty photos, PhotoFunia is an easy way to make these fun images. However, the app isn't very sophisticated, and is quite slow to use.

Cheap as chips

Fiverr is a services-for-sale app based off the popular website of the same name in which services can be rendered for as little as a "fiver" ($5). Some of the popular services include proofreading, voiceover recording, and artwork such as someone drawing a picture of your face. This is ideal for individuals or smaller companies that need some quick temp work done and a cheap price.

You can search using the magnifying glass in the top right corner. Fiverr also provides some pre-made categories such as advertising, gifts, and programming & tech which each have their own sub categories (e.g. programming can be specified into C++, Java, and Wordpress).

Each micro-job in Fiverr has a short description as well as a photo, audio recording, or video that also help to explain the service.

How does Fiverr work?

Fiverr takes cues from its website and keeps its design incredibly intuitive and simple. Most services can be bought within three taps.

To sell a service on Fiverr, you must register with your Google Connect or Facebook account. After you have been confirmed, you can start offering your services. Similar to eBay and Amazon’s seller ratings, Fiverr’s sellers also have user feedback so you can do extra research before paying.

A handy marketplace

Fiverr’s inherently cheap cost and micro job system fills a niche that creative types will love. It’s clean design and easy-to-use interface makes this an excellent app to have for those odd jobs.

Super is Twitter co-founder Biz Stone's latest social network-style venture that focuses on creating memes based around a number of predefined categories (the worst, the craziest, my favorite, I'm thinking, etc.) that you then share to your timeline.

In a nutshell, you choose one of these categories, add some text (anything you like) and then add a picture from Super or one of your own instead. And then people can 'love' it or respond with their own meme. We live in a world of memes and animated GIFs so why should a social network based around creating your own not be the next big thing?

From Twitter to Jelly to Super

While Biz Stone is probably most famous for co-founding Twitter, he has worked on several other projects and set up Jelly Industries in 2012. As CEO of the company, Stone and his team released its first app earlier in 2014. Jelly is a Q&A forum (similar to Yahoo Answers) that had initial success before falling quickly out of the app charts top 100. But Stone has not been put off and has come out with a new app called Super (a name that was inspired by the full version of the word - superlative).

While Super is likely to have some initial success due to the weight that Stone's name carries as well as pure curiosity, it takes a lot for an app to succeed in an already crowded market.

The description of Super is either enigmatic or cryptic, depending on your point of view. But the bottom line is that it seems to be more aimed at having fun rather than a serious new product that fills a gap in the market or solves an everyday problem.

What's on your mind?

Once you've signed up to Super (using your email address and providing your real name and username), you can search for friends via your address book, Twitter or Facebook. But even if your friends aren't already using Super, you can chose to see posts (or maybe they are called Supers?) from everyone using the app. Super (like Twitter) also allows you to follow people and you can select to only see posts from these 'friends'.

Once you've decided you want to create your meme and in which category, you go through a step-by-step process of deciding the text, then the image and then you can add a location and URL and decide whether to attribute it to your username. And you're done and ready to share it with the world. There is no option just to share it with certain people and, unlike Twitter, there's no web version where anyone can check out what you're shared.

The app works as a kind of stream of consciousness, with people posting their random thoughts in a meme format, which are - lets be honest - mostly nonsense. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as it is kinda fun, which is what Super is aiming for. People are pretty friendly as well; it's all about the 'love' at the moment. But - unlike Secret - it doesn't allow people to post completely anonymously. It calls the option 'anonymish' as any post you make will show up in your followers' timeline so they may be able to work out who it is from.

Super currently has limited features: post a meme, love a post or respond. There doesn't seem to be a feature to filter by category; you can only search by people or topic and there is no direct messaging option. Although the profile creation options are pretty cool - you can add loads of Supers (that's what I'm calling them now) to give people a better and more visual idea of your interests and what kind of person you are so they know whether they want to follow you.

Twitter on steroids

Super is loud, bold, very brightly colored and in your face, so while it's pretty invigorating to start with, it could easily give you a headache. If you're familiar with Twitter, it's fairly easy to get in to and it's a slick app, which is to be expected from a young developer like Jelly Industries. As there aren't a lot of features at the moment, it's also really simple to navigate your way around. If you're looking for more tips and tricks, then Super's own community account is always there to help.

Focused on fun

I like Super because it's focused on fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's supposed to be about making people laugh and having access to people's weird and random thoughts, with the addition of some recommendations and travel pictures (I've seen loads of these already).

Currently, as the user base is rather small and not many people have filled out their profiles, it needs more content filters, especially as people start posting in different languages. Overall, Super isn't a useful app (nor does it aim to be) and, while it does need more people to join and participate to succeed, it has taken me by surprise as offering something new to the market that is both creative and super fun.

Selfies can be a bit hit and miss - let's face it. You try to take a nice picture of yourself, and it ends up looking like one of your grandparents. Well fear not, YouCam Perfect offers a solution in the form of a whole host of selfie editing and retouch features. And for those who already look beautiful in their selfies, then maybe you can make yourself look uglier. The choice is yours.

Beautify yourself

Before you take a photo of your lovely self, you can apply a filter, as well as make some minor tweaks, such as enabling the auto beautify option and setting a timer.

Once that's done there are loads of options to make you more (or less, if you prefer) attractive. Some of the top beautifying effects include smooth your skin, reshape your face, remove blemishes, and get rid of any background objects that might distract people from your obvious attractiveness. There is also the very mysterious "auto-beautify" option; I never worked out exactly what that was supposed to do though (I thought maybe replace my face with someone more beautiful).

You can also add make some fairly standard changes to your photos including cropping, adding frames, and placing your face in a pretty background scene.

Look more like a supermodel... kinda

One really interesting feature that YouCam perfect offers is the ability to turn yourself into a supermodel, well to make yourself look taller at least. To do this, you need to take a full length photo and then simply move the slider up the screen - it provides guidelines on screen to make sure you keep your body in proportion. Not only is this super amusing, it actually works! Although the caveat is that it won't turn you into Naomi Campbell.

The taller option is pretty reliable, but some of the other features are hit and miss in terms of effectiveness, and they take some practice before they actually improve the way you look.

Look at me

Aside from the serious issue of whether these kind of apps have a negative effect on self confidence and are detrimental to people who already have problems with their body image, YouCam Perfect does a good job as an image editing app. It has a wide range of features, the retouches are easy to apply if a tad ineffective, and it sports a cute, pastel-colored interface.

There are hundreds of camera apps on Google Play that promise to make you a better photographer or dramatically improve the photos you take. Camera360 Ultimate actually delivers on these promises and allows you to take photos like a pro without loads of effort and years of practice.

Take SLR-style photos from your phone

Camera360 Ultimate is not short of features. It boasts a wide variety of 'cams' with different options available depending on the type of picture you want to take. The first place you'll want to start is in Easy Cam where most of the settings are set to automatic, though you can on or off the stabilizer and composition grid, and easily zoom in and out.

Other interesting camera options include the 'effects' cam, the 'funny' cam, the 'selfie' cam (which automatically smooths your face) and the 'color shift' cam, which allows you to keep just one color in your photo and make the rest of the background black and white. This is something I would never be able to do with a regular camera app, but the results are really impressive.

This is equally true of the tilt shift cam, which allows you to select a part (or parts) of a photo to blur while keeping the rest of it in focus. It's the kind of thing you normally need a top-of-the-range camera to achieve.

And if none of the pre-installed camera options in Camera360 Ultimate meet your needs, you can download more from the store. At the moment the options are limited, but hopefully there will be more released soon.

The in-app photo album is a highlight as, with one touch of a button, you can go straight into a grid view of your photos arranged by date. Other features include transferring your photos to phones that are nearby through near-field communications, as well as the option to back up your photos in the cloud.

Camera360 Ultimate also works with the Sony Lens-Style camera, which is a lens that clips to your phone to produce better results.

Takes some getting used to

When I first started using Camera360 Ultimate, I found it difficult to navigate and I was frustrated because I wanted to take a picture, not mess around trying to find the right setting and options. Nothing is immediately obvious in the app.

Camera360 Ultimate can be slow and sluggish; pressing the back arrow at the top of the screen often doesn't seem to work, while pressing the back button on your phone either seems to do nothing or take you back to your phone homescreen.

Also, you have to adjust a slider to zoom rather than pinch, which is what most people are used to. So it isn't the most intuitive app in the world.

That said, after looking at the results, I can say that the photos were probably the best I've ever taken. And, once you take some time to properly explore the Camera360 Ultimate and all its features, you'll easily get the hang of it. Being able to take stunning photos that often look like they were from a SLR camera is very impressive.

Fantastic results, if only it was easier to use...

Camera360 Ultimate allows you to take some fantastic, professional-looking photos in a variety of styles with a range of effects. It's perfect if you just want to take a 'normal' photo, and it's also great if you want to achieve a more specific type of effect, as you only have to change the 'cam'.

If the developer improved the usability issues and made the app more intuitive, Camera360 Ultimate could become the one-stop camera app of choice for Android users.

The accuracy of Makeup Genius is very good if you're looking directly at the camera. If you tilt your head too much or make an exaggerated facial expression, it will throw off the app. Calibration is pretty simple and requires moving slightly to center your face. 

A fun and useful app

Makeup Genius is a great app because of how easy it is to use. It's limited by its product selection and functionality but its ease of use make up for it.

MyIdol is an app that generates 3D avatars using your face. It lets you customize your avatar with different clothes and accessories. It even lets you animate your avatar in different scenes.

Oh god. I've created a monster.

You create an avatar by importing a photo from your iPhone's camera roll or by taking a selfie. The app scans your photo for a face and will intelligently detect where your eyes, nose, and mouth are. 

The app is surprisingly great at facial recognition, though it does take it a while to finish scanning. After your photo is imported, you can move little pointers around to fine tune where your eyes, nose, and mouth are. Then the fun begins.

MyIdol wraps your 2D picture around a 3D avatar to great effect. You can move the avatar around to see different angles and you can customize your creation with different outfits and actions. Most of the app is locked for now, with no way to unlock it for now since this is the  Chinese version. 

For extra weirdness, try importing your dog's face. Warning: you will be disturbed.

English version coming soon

MyIdol is spreading like wildfire throughout China and its hype has made it over to the United States. The company promises to release an English version soon but the version we have now is entirely in Chinese. 

That makes navigating  MyIdol a tricky affair. I can't read Chinese so I resorted to tapping on everything. Most of the customizations options are locked, with no way to unlock them from what I could tell. I'm pretty certain the English app will support in-app purchases for customizations but it's not ready for the US market yet. 

The app is easy to use, with a myriad  of sliders to customize your avatar. You can put him/her/it in a scene, including an extremely creepy stripper mode. 

It's all fun for about 15 minutes until you realize how pointless this whole app is. I guess people just love looking at themselves.

The Chinese version of JibJab

If you remember JibJab, both companies achieved the same thing. Put peoples' faces on a funny avatar and make them do whacky stuff. It's fun for a short amount of time before you realize no one cares. And that you just wasted real money on buying virtual clothes for a 3D avatar. 

Please stop posting videos and photos of your MyIdol on Facebook. No one cares.

VidOn Player HD boasts a set of codecs and playback options that, while impressive, muddy the water to what it actually is. At its simplest, it is a way to play almost any video format on your mobile device. It has other, more technical, features but - unless your home network is already set up for sharing and streaming over LAN - you probably won’t use them.

When it works it works

Moving videos on to your phone or tablet can prove a more trying experience than it should. What VidOn Player HD provides is a simple way to just dump your video files en masse onto your device and watch at your leisure, regardless of format or the need to encode them. You can check the iTunes page for a list of the supported codecs, but almost every one I can think of is present. It concludes with the “and many more” catch-all companies use then they realize they have already gone further than normal people are likely to read or care about.

The best thing is playback of these is smooth and available in full HD. With the ability to display video right up to 1080p on your mobile device you can be certain you are getting the same experience as on home theater set up just a few short feet from your face.

Once you become accustomed to the app, you can also train yourself in its handy gesture controls. These allow you to alter volume, brightness, and scrub back and forth through movie without bringing up the display.

And when it doesn't, it really doesn't

That’s the easy stuff, just drop files on your phone and play them. But setting up the streaming, FTP, and Wi-Fi options is a far more complex process, and with no instructions the process proves both unguided and unintuitive. Even knowing the various terms in play, we found it impossible to successfully download videos or stream them over the office’s local network.

Our issue of course may be the office setup. Developed for home sharing, networks already set up for streaming and sharing over LAN (using Upnp, Samba, Ftp, DLNA, Nas devices) may find utilizing the features of VidOn Player HD a simple process – making this element of the app really only for users looking to fulfill an existing need.

Along with all these complexities there was also one clear technical issue which saw the app occasionally quitting and sending me back to the homescreen while navigating it menus – a definite issue, but not one that affected playback.

Good at what it does

But I shouldn't leave this on such a negative note, because when VidOn Player HD works it works well – playing and filing videos. It just that all of the other features are so hard to set up, that it is tough to recommend to casual users.

Bestie is an app designed to make your selfies always look great. Never mind that you’re not photogenic, just apply a filter, touch it up a little, and you will look ready for the cover of a magazine.

Make great selfies in record time

If you are a selfie lover, then Bestie is designed for you. It lets you make yourself beautiful with a bunch of real-time filters and editing tools. First you select a filter that you like, or let the app inspire your with a random choice from its filter selection. The next option lets you slightly tweak the appearance of your skin, but frankly the 5 options make little difference. You can also add a vignette, activate an option that improves night shots, or apply a slight blur.

Once have the pose and filter effects selected, you can take a picture with a simple touch screen. Then either save and share the image, or retouch a little further for that real model look.

The second path is when Bestie shows its potential. The app offers several options of facial retouching: removing blemishes (from you or the photo), stylizing your face, enlarging your eyes, and altering your nose. Think of it as risk free, temporary plastic surgery.

Select, slide, and enjoy

Like similar selfie apps, B612 and Candy Camera, Bestie lets you select filters simply by sliding your finger across the screen. This option is really useful, especially as the filter quality is good. I can easily tell that they are designed for portraits, as they did noticeably improve my appearance.

But as I said, the real success of Bestie is the ability to retouch your image. This can dramatically improve the appearance of your face with little previous configuration: just tell the app the position of your eyes and your lips and move the bar of each effect to make it more or less. I know it sounds silly, but it is actually kind of magic.

The problem is that is mostly automated. This means that sometimes it will make a photo worse – and continue to make it worse - as you are unable to perform specific adjustments. For example, if it makes your nose look odd it will simply double down on the effect rather than giving you more control over the change it is making.

There is also an absence of some other modifying options. You can’t change the tone of your skin, color of your hair, add makeup, or modify the picture - common features in similar apps.

Another option that would certainly improve the app are basic editing tools, like trimming the image or adding a frame. In the age of Instagram, getting the image to the right dimensions is all important so - after a quick go on Bestie - I still needed to use another app to edit to size.

Just to make you beautiful

Bestie is a good app if all you want to seem more beautiful or handsome in photos. However, if you want to do much else, you will be better served looking elsewhere.

When Halloween is on its way - and you aren’t naturally pale, jerky, and screaming - then you might find a use for HauntedBooth. This little app takes a photo of your face and, with a little calibration, is able to animate your visage into that of a jittery, howling banshee. Which is fun, for about five minutes.

Hey, are you okay?

Considering the host of scary face apps on the store, HauntedBooth is actually quite impressive. Rather than simply offering a selection of lackluster masks to place over your face or photo, HauntedBooth asks you mark out your eyes and mouth then it animates your whole face.

You start by picking a picture from your library or taking a photo in-app. The picture has to be quite dull - full face towards the camera – but don’t worry because HauntedBooth will soon make it more exciting.

Once your photo is in place, it’s time to make sure that the app has accurately identified your eyes and mouth. It is actually pretty good at doing this automatically, but occasionally you may need to move the markers to perfect it.

You don’t look very well, a bit pale.

Finally, you get to pick out exactly what you want on your frightening face. From a screaming open maw to wrought, bloodshot eyes, there are a good range of selectable features to ensure that your face is as unnerving as you wasn’t it to be. Though there are a number of options, some are locked behind a paywall – but you get a good idea of everything on offer from the free version.

After this, tapping on the tiny preview of your face reveals the true horror! By which I mean a jittering image of your pale face, with whatever additions you have made to the eyes and mouth, superimposed over your own. It moves and groans a little, plus you have the option to pull and drag it around - forcing it to deform and morph as you move it.

You’re a g... g… g… ghost!

HauntedBooth is one of the better freaky face apps we have come across. And the effect is truly creepy the first time your pale face starts to moan and jerk around on screen (especially if The Ring still gives you nightmares). Unfortunately, with many of the options locked behind a paywall, you will probably exhaust the free fun on pretty quickly.

But, the same company can also turn you into a zombie… so you can give that a try here.
